What is an F-Choline PET-CT scan?
F-Choline PET-CT Scan is a non-invasive advanced imaging process that involves the use of a radioactive tracer to detect certain types of cancer like prostate cancer.
What is the purpose of an F-Choline PET-CT Scan?
The F-Choline PET-CT Scan is mainly used for staging, monitoring and diagnosing, identifying, and localizing the following
- High-risk prostate cancer
- Biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer
- Secondary metastases to lymph nodes, soft tissues, and bones.
Some other uses of an F-Choline PET-CT Scan are to monitor treatment response in prostate cancer patients, staging and restaging of prostate cancer, guide therapy of patients, and localize parathyroid adenoma in individuals having PHPT.
How do you prepare for an F-Choline PET-CT Scan?
- 6-7 hours of fasting is necessary before the test process starts.
- You should avoid using tobacco products on the day of your test.
- Do not forget to inform the doctors about all the medications you are taking.
- Also, inform the doctors if you are pregnant or if you are breastfeeding before the test process starts.
- Inform the doctors if you have any medical device implanted in your body.
- You should avoid all types of strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours before the test process starts.
- Do not forget to carry all your medical reports on the day of the test.
What to expect during the test?
- Firstly, the F-Choline radioactive tracer will be injected into your vein.
- You may have to wait for approximately an hour after receiving the injection.
- You will be asked to remove all types of metallic objects from your body before the scanning starts.
- Then you will be asked to lie down on a narrow examination table, which will slide into the scanning machine along with your body.
- Once the table gets inserted in the scanning machine and the machine starts capturing images, you have to start avoiding all kinds of body movements as much as possible.
- After all the necessary images are captured, you can leave the laboratory.
Healthcare providers may recommend you to wait for a while in the lab so that you can seek medical attention because of the presence of the radiotracer in your body. Also, you need to drink plenty of water after the test process ends to flush the radiotracer out of your body.
Result Interpretation
You will receive the test report within 24-48 hours after the test. The healthcare providers will let you know if any abnormalities have been detected in the test report.
