To boost your hemoglobin levels, you need to consume iron-rich foods, like organ meats, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, kale, broccoli, nuts, and seeds.
  • Increase your folate intake: Folate, also known as vitamin B9, is essential for production of hemoglobin. Your body uses folate to form heme, which is part of hemoglobin. Lack of folate can lead you to develop folate-deficiency anemia. Therefore, try to eat more folate-rich foods, such as eggs, spinach, fruits, beans, whole grains, peanuts, and sunflower seeds.
  • Boost iron absorption: Sometimes, your body cannot absorb iron completely from foods. Certain vitamins can help boost the body's iron absorption, such as vitamin A, vitamin C, and beta-carotene. That is why you should try to eat foods that are rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, and beta-carotene.
  • Take iron supplements: Doctors recommend iron supplements along with dietary changes for people who have extremely low hemoglobin levels. These medications usually gradually increase over the course of a few weeks. The dosage of the supplements depends on your hemoglobin levels. Also, too much iron can be dangerous for your health, and may cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and constipation.

Making use of these tips can help you maintain your hemoglobin levels. People with severely low hemoglobin levels may require hospitalization to quickly increase the number of red blood cells by blood transfusion, bone marrow transplant, or even surgery to stop internal bleeding.
