All you need to know about a bone profile test

This disorder generally may not have any symptoms, but for a long time, it can cause broken bones and bone deformities.
  • Fibrous dysplasia: This disorder arises when unusual fibrous tissues or scar-like tissue replace healthy bone. Fibrous dysplasia, over time, can weaken the bones and increase your risk of fractures.

What does this test look for?

A bone profile test looks for different proteins and minerals in your bones. Here are a few components that will be measured in this test:

  • Calcium: Calcium is one of the major components of bones. The calcium-phosphate complex supports the structure and strength of the bones. Low calcium levels can impair daily body functions and increase the risk of developing osteoporosis.
  • Albumin: This is an extremely important protein that helps keep fluid from leaking out of the blood vessels. It also helps to move small molecules through the blood. Abnormal albumin levels may indicate a problem with your kidneys or liver.
  • Alkaline phosphatase: Alkaline phosphatase is present in the liver and bone cells. Measuring ALP protein levels is important to detect liver as well as bone disorders.
  • Phosphorus: This is a micronutrient that is essential for teeth and bone health. As phosphorus helps in bone development, analyzing the phosphorus level is important to determine your bone health.

These are all the common components that are measured in this profile test. However, the tests will depend on the package you choose.

When should you go for a bone profile blood test?

As bone disorders do not cause much noticeable symptoms, it is important to go for this if your age is over 50. You should also check your bone density if you have lost height.

What do you need to know before appearing for the test?

You cannot eat or drink anything except water for 10 to 12 hours before the blood test. Also, make sure to consult your doctor if you are taking any medication, as certain medicines can impact test results.
