What is a Lipase test?

A Lipase test’s purpose is to diagnose pancreatic disorders. This test is also used to monitor acute or chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and celiac disease.

When to get tested?

Your doctor may recommend a Lipase test if you have symptoms of pancreatic disease such as fever, nausea, abdominal or back pain, or loss of appetite.

Test preparation

You may need to fast for about 8 to 12 hours before going for this test. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions.

Result interpretation

• A high lipase level indicates pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, celiac disease, gallstone, cholecystitis, gastroenteritis, an ulcer.
• A low lipase level indicates the presence of chronic pancreatitis or cystic fibrosis.
