What is an FDG whole body PET-CT scan?
An FDG Whole body PET-CT scan is known as an advanced imaging technique. The FDG Whole body PET-CT scan is used for the purpose of detecting cancer. A wide range of diseases can be detected using this test.
What can be detected using a FDG Whole body PET-CT scan?
A range of cancers, infections, heart diseases, neurological disorders can be detected using an FDG Whole body PET-CT scan. Also, early detection of tumors is also possible using this non-invasive imaging method. It can also be used to
- Detect any active cancer in any individual
- Monitor treatment response in cancer patients
- Detect tumor recurrence
- Guide the planning of any radiation therapy
- Check if the cancer has spread
- Screen for underlying malignancies in asymptomatic people
How to prepare for FDG Whole body PET-CT scan?
- 4-6 hours of fasting is required before appearing for this test.
- You must not take insulin at the day of testing.
- You must inform the healthcare providers if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Diabetic patients may be allowed to have a light breakfast 4-6 hours before the test starts.
- You must inform the healthcare providers if you are on any kind of medication.
- Also, inform the healthcare providers if you are diabetic because they can suggest appropriate medications in order to make sure that your body’s blood sugar levels are in correct range while the scanning process takes place. If your blood sugar level is too high, then it may not be possible to perform the scan.
What to expect during a FDG Whole body PET-CT scan?
- A little amount of radioactive sugar called FDG will be injected into your vein. The reason behind injecting FDG is that tumor cells remain more active than the normal cells, and they will need sugar to grow. Once the radioactive sugar is injected and it gets consumed by the tumor cells, they will start getting lightened up in the scan pictures. Then it will be easier for the PET-CT camera to take clearer images.
- The PET-CT machine will feel like a small tunnel. You will be asked to lie on a narrow table and then it will slide into the machine along with your body. You must not make any movements while the imaging process is ongoing.
- Once the scanning process starts, the PET-CT camera detects areas where the glucose concentration is higher than usual, then starts taking pictures of them.
- Once the imaging process is over, you can leave the diagnostic lab unless you are facing any kind of illness.
Result Interpretation
Once the necessary images are collected, they will be examined by a doctor. The healthcare providers will let you know if any kind of abnormalities are found in the test report.
