Flourishing and affecting the urban poor areas, countryside areas, suburban areas and also the affluent neighborhoods, dengue has now become a widely feared disease due to the tremendous threat it poses to life.

With common cold and normal fever invading homes after homes, sometimes it becomes difficult to identify the conditions as dengue. Therefore, here is a closer look at some important symptoms that can help one identify it early and opt for the right treatment when there's still time for recovery.

Principal Symptoms

Symptoms of dengue generally start to become visible after four to six days since the infection and usually last for around ten days. Some of its most important symptoms are:

  • Pain in the joints
  • Pain in the bone and the muscles
  • Mild bleeding from the gums or nose
  • Easy bruising
  • Skin rash
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced count of the white blood cells

Remember, sometimes the dengue symptoms can be mild and easily mistaken as nothing but normal flu or some viral infection. Therefore, it is necessary that to opt for a consultation with the doctors who may suggest a blood test to be sure observing the flu like symptoms, if necessary. Compared to the adults and the older children, the symptoms of dengue tend to be milder in younger children and those who have not had dengue before.

Warning Signs

Don’t forget to watch out for the warning signs of dengue when the temperature begins to drop, around 3 to 7 days after the outbreak of its symptoms. Opt for emergency medical care or ask for immediate medical attention, in case the below-mentioned warning signs become visible:

  • Vomiting blood
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Appearance of patches or red spots on the skin
  • Persistent vomiting with unbearable pain in the abdomen
  • Profuse bleeding from the gums or the nose
  • The excrement or stool becoming tarry and black
  • The skin becoming cold and pale

The dengue hemorrhaging fever or DHF usually last for two to seven days, with normal dengue symptoms. Once the fever starts to decline, the warning signs become evident leading to rapidly dropping platelet counts, hemorrhagic manifestations, enlargement of the liver, tendency to develop bruises easily and the circulatory system's failure.

The warning signs may lead to DSS or dengue shock syndrome and result in death. Studies have shown that those with weak immune system or second dengue infection have a greater risk of developing DHF than others.
